Fun Fall Crafts for Kids

November 13, 2023, Lynne Brown

As the weather turns colder and rain arrives here in the Pacific Northwest, we spend more time indoors. Sometimes it can be challenging to find new things for our littles to do. Fall crafts provide an answer! Autumn can be an excellent season for engaging our young children in fun and creative craft activities.

Here are some ways to have fun together with fall crafts.

  1. Leaf Rubbings: Collect colorful fall leaves and place them under a piece of paper. Have the children use crayons or colored pencils to gently rub over the paper, revealing the leaf’s texture and shape.
  2. Paper Plate Scarecrows: Have the kids paint a paper plate as the scarecrow’s face and glue on construction paper for the hat and clothing. Add straw or yarn for the hair.
  3. Apple Prints: Cut apples in half and dip them in paint to create apple stamps. Kids can use them to make apple prints on paper. Lots of other vegetables can be used this way. Try cutting corn cobs in half. Dip them in paint and use them as stamps to create unique fall patterns and designs.
  4. Pine Cone Creatures: Collect pine cones and let the children turn them into creatures by adding googly eyes, pipe cleaner arms, and other decorations. Pine cones also make great bird feeders. Spread peanut butter over the pinecone, then roll in birdseed. Attach a string and hang it outside for our feathered friends to enjoy.
  5. Fall Collage: Provide a variety of fall-themed materials like colored paper, tissue paper, acorns, and leaves. Let the kids create collages by gluing these items onto a larger piece of paper.
  6. Nature Mobiles: Go on a nature walk to collect twigs, leaves, acorns, and other natural materials. Then, use these items to create hanging mobiles.
  7. Paper Bag Scarecrows: Have kids stuff a paper bag with newspaper, decorate the face, and use the bag as a scarecrow.
  8. Fall Wreaths: Cut out a cardboard circle, and have the children glue on fall-themed items like leaves, acorns, and small pumpkins to create a beautiful fall wreath.
  9. Leaf People: Collect leaves of different shapes and sizes. Use them as the bodies, and have the kids draw faces on them to create leaf people.
  10. Turkey Handprints: Trace a child’s handprint on paper and have them decorate it to make a turkey by adding a beak, wattle, and feathers.
  11. Pasta Necklaces: Paint and string colored pasta shapes to create fall-themed necklaces.
  12. Felt or Fabric Pumpkin Patch: Cut out small pumpkins from felt or fabric and let the children arrange them on a piece of felt to create their pumpkin patch.

Be sure to provide adult supervision with young children when using small objects and materials that could be a choking hazard. Have fun with them exploring the colors, textures, and themes of fall while encouraging their creativity.
